The Compact SUV
Most motoring journalists agree that the most fuel efficient SUV on the market today is the Chevrolet Equinox. Its four cylinder, 182 horsepower engine delivers 22 miles per gallon for city travel and 32 miles per gallon when driven on the highway.
The initial asking price of around $23,000 is competitive and the IIHS rates it very highly for safety. The interior is pleasant and comfortably accommodates 5 passengers, but the exterior appearance of the Equinox is unexciting and some families might find its 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space barely adequate.
Slightly less economical on fuel is the popular Honda CR-V. This stylish five-seater has an initial price of around $21,000 and a driver can expect 21 city miles or 28 highway miles per gallon. Increased cargo space – up to 72.9 cubic feet – is available when the second row seat is folded and slid forward.
The Medium Size SUV
Ford’s Flex is probably the most fuel efficient crossover in the mid range. Fuel consumption of 17 miles per gallon (city) and 24 miles per gallon (highway) is easy to achieve from its 3.5 liter V6 engine. This mid-size vehicle seats up to seven in three rows and has cargo capacity of up to 83 cubic feet when both the second and third rows of seats are down.
The base model, the Flex SE, has a starting price around the $29,000 mark, about average for this class of SUV. The Ford Flex has been designed with comfort in mind, assuring driver and passengers of a smooth ride on all types of road surface and it is rated highly by safety authorities. Although many find the Flex unexciting to drive, its distinctive retro exterior style is admired by drivers and viewers alike.
Many testers rate the mid-sized Lexus RX 350 as the most fuel efficient luxury SUV currently available, at 18 city and 24 highway miles per gallon. Accommodating up to five passengers or as much as 80.3 cubic feet of cargo, its styling and luxury match its $40,000 price tag.
The Large SUV
If you are in the market for a large fuel efficient full size SUV, there are two Chevrolets with starting prices around $37,000 that achieve 15 city miles and 21 highway miles per gallon. The Chevrolet Tahoe seats up to nine and has up to 108.9 cubic feet of cargo space when the second row of seats has been folded and the third row removed.
The Chevrolet Suburban has a massive 138.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity but, as with the Tahoe, the third row of seats has to be removed to achieve the maximum cargo space.
Not every SUV is a gas-guzzler. The automobiles described here are among the most fuel efficient SUV models in their size range. Whether you are in the market for an economical SUV or looking for the most fuel efficient used SUV, there is sure to be a vehicle with passenger and cargo carrying options to suit your needs.
